Generation 1

JOHN COWAP was born about 1785. He married ELIZABETH GRIFFITH, daughter of WILLIAM GRIFFITH and MARY, on the 16th April, 1805 in St. Oswald Church, Chester, Cheshire. They settled in Dunham on the Hill, Cheshire, where John worked as a farm labourer and they raised their family. John died in March, 1851 in Dunham on the Hill and was buried on the 13th March, 1851 in St. John the Evangelist C. of E. Church, Alvanley, Cheshire. Elizabeth had been born in Alvanley about 1886.

WILLIAM COWAP (JOHN1) was born 1807 in Dunham on the Hill and was baptised on the 4th October, 1807 in The Parish Church, Thornton le Moors. He married SARAH and settled in Helsby, Cheshire, where he farmed. William died on the 1st May, 1868 in Helsby and was buried on the 4th May, 1868 in St. John the Evangelist, C.of E. Church, Alvanley. Sarah died in 1876 and was buried with her husband on the 18th October, 1876.

JOHN COWAP, (JOHN1) was born about 1813 in Dunham on the Hill and was baptised on the 10th October, 1813 in St. James the Great, Ince, Cheshire. He married HANNAH MALT on the 29th December, 1834 in St. Mary Parish Church, Thornton le Moors, Cheshire. They settled in Manley, Cheshire, where they raised their family and John worked as a husbandman and agricultural labourer. In the 1860's, they moved to Ashton, Cheshire. John died in 1888 aged 74 years and Hannah died in 1904 aged 88 years.

JANE COWAP, (JOHN1) was born 1827 in Hob Lane, Dunham Hill, and was baptised on the 22nd December, 1827, St. Mary Parish Church, Thornton le Moors. She Worked as a servant at Holme Farm, Ince, before she was married. Jane married THOMAS ATHERTON on the 30th June 30, 1864 in St. Lawrence Parish Church, Frodsham, Cheshire. They settled in Helsby, where Thomas died in 1887 and was buried in St. Paul Parish Church, Helsby on the 21st February, 1887. Jane died after 1891.

WILLIAM COWAP (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born in Manley, Vale Royal, Cheshire and was baptised on the 10th April, 1836 in St. John the Evangelist C. E. Church, Alvanley, Vale Royal, Cheshire. He married MARGARET WRIGHT in St. John Parish Church, Ashton Hayes, Cheshire in 1857. Margaret died in 1864. After his wife died , William moved to Monks Coppenhall, near Crewe with his family and sister, Mary, who acted as house keeper. William worked as a labourer in the steel works in Monks Coppenhall.

When Mary was 13 years old, she worked as a farmer's servant attached to George Britland household at 3, Green, Alvaney. She married JOHN HELSBY, son of RICHARD and JANE HELSBY nee BROMLEY, on the 1st January, 1866 in The Parish Church, Coppenhall, Crewe.

JOHN COWAP (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born on the 31st January, 1839 in Manley, Cheshire and was baptised on the 24th February, 1839 in St. John the Evangelist C. E. Church, Alvanley. He married MARGARET DYKE in 1859 in St. Lawrence Parish Church, Frodsham, Cheshire. Margaret was born about 1839 and John was an agricultural labourer. They resided in Mouldsworth until about 1870, then they moved to the Common, Kingswood, Cheshire.

GEORGE COWAP (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born in Manley, Cheshire and was baptised on the 2nd October, 1842 in St. John the Evangelist C. E. Church, Alvanley. He was a witness at sister, Mary's wedding to John Helsby. George married MARY YOUD, daughter of JOHN YOUD and MARY VERNON, on the 29th July, 1869 in St. Andrew Parish Church, Tarvin, Cheshire. George's sister, Martha Cowap, and George Lloyd witnessed his marriage.

Mary Youd was baptised on the 27th March, 1836, in St. Andrew Parish Church, Tarvin, Cheshire. Her ancestry can be traced on Karl Held's web site . George died in 1872 and I think his widow married William Cowap, George's brother in 1879.

    JAMES COWAP, (JOHN2, JOHN1) was born in Manley, Cheshire and was baptised on the 13th March, 1853 in St. John the Evangelist C. E. Church, Alvanley. James was the twin of Samuel and during boyhood they moved to Ashton with the family. They lived at 65 Duck Lane, Ashton, Cheshire during the 1861 census. He met and then married MARGARET FORBES, daughter of THOMAS FORBES and JANE POLSON on the 27th April, 1879 in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. James died in 1936 in 17 Constitution Street, Peterhead.

    The child of JAMES COWAP and MARGARET FORBES is:

He married ANN and they raised their family in Weston, Runcorn. In 1881 John was a fruit and potato salesman. John died on 13th March, 1883 in Weston, Runcorn and was buried in St. John the Evangelist, Alvanley. Ann died on the 13th July, 1911 and was buried with him.
