Generation 1

JOSEPH SUTCLIFFE, (GEORGE HENRY2, HENRY 1) was born on the 24th January, 1877 in Stalybridge, Cheshire and was baptised on the 25th February, 1877 in St. Peter R.C. Church, Stalybridge.

He married SARAH ANN SAXON on the 6th June, 1896 in St. John Parish Church, Dukinfield, Cheshire. Sarah Ann was the daughter of JOHN and HANNAH SAXON. Although Sarah was baptised into the Church of England, she was converted to Catholism during her marriage to Joseph Sutcliffe and was baptised again on the 9th February, 1904 in St. Peter R.C. Church, Stalybridge. They settled in Stalybridge and Joseph worked as a funeral labourer. Later he worked in a forge. They lived in Canal Street, then Sett Street, Stalybridge , where they brought up their family.

Joseph was a private in the 10th Bt. of the Lancashire Fusilliers and died of wounds in Arras, France, on the 22nd March, 1918. There is no known grave, but his name is recorded with others from the Lancashire Fusiliers on the Arras Memorial, Bay 5, in the Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, France. It is also recorded on the Stalybridge War Memorial.

Sarah, later, married JAMES BOOTH. James was buried on the 22nd September, 1942 aged 68 years in St. Paul Parish Church, Stalybridge. Sarah was buried on the 31th May, 1944 with him and her parents.

Generation 2

JAMES SUTCLIFFE (JOSEPH3, GEORGE HENRY2, HENRY1) was born on the 4th November, 1906 in Stalybridge and was baptised on the 17th December, 1906 in St. Peter R.C. Church, Stalybridge. He married MARGARET POWELL in 1937 in Holy Trinity, Castle Hall, Stalybridge, Cheshire. They lived in in 15, Illingworth Avenue, Stalybridge.

Margaret died in Stalybridge and was buried on the 8th February, 1979, in Dukinfield Cemetery, Cheshire. James died in a Stalybridge retirement home and was buried with his wife on the 6th July, 1987.

MARY SUTCLIFFE (JOSEPH3, GEORGE HENRY2, HENRY1 was born on the 28th February, 1910 in Stalybridge and was baptised on the 18th June, 1910 in St. Peter R.C. Church, Stalybridge. In 1934, Mary married SAMUEL LEIGH from Hyde, in a civil ceremony in Ashton under Lyne, Cheshire.

Mary worked all her life in Ashton Bros Cotton Mill, Hyde, mainly in the weaving shed. Samuel was buried in Dukinfield Cemetry, Cheshire and Mary, having survived Sam, died on 18th June, 1994 in 75, Talbot Road, Newton, near Hyde. At her request she was cremated at Dukinfield Crematorium on the 24th June, 1994 and her ashes were scattered over the moors.

CLARA SUTCLIFFE (JOSEPH3, GEORGE HENRY2, HENRY1) was born on the 12th June, 1912 in Stalybridge. Clara worked in the spinning room of the cotton mill for a few years. Then the church sent her to serve in the Sudan Interior Mission, Liverpool, as a domestic servant. She married WILLIAM WILCOCK , son of JAMES and MARY JANE WILCOCK, on the 21st December, 1935 in St. Dunstan Church, Liverpool.

HENRY SUTCLIFFE (JOSEPH3, GEORGE HENRY2, HENRY1 was born on the 17th May, 1914 in Stalybridge and was baptised on the 21st June, 1914 in St. Peter R.C. Church, Stalybridge. He was always called Harry and in 1934, he married MARY ANN RUSSELL, in a civil ceremony in Ashton under Lyne, Cheshire.

They lived at 35, Walker Avenue, Stalybridge. Henry was cremated at Dukinfield Crematorium and Mary was cremated on the 3rd January, 1997 at Dukinfield Crematorium. Her remains, like those of Harry, were scattered on Rosebed B.
